The 2014 Tumbleweed Couples hosted a total of 58 teams divided into five different flights. Rusty Wilson and daughter Kelsi finally had a weekend in which both were "running in all cylinders" at the right time and shot rounds of 61 and 60 to win by four shots over Dustin & Kelly Gunkel antd by five over other three teams which included defending champions Blake & Rikki Bergman, Michael & Ann Cowan and Paul & Haley Gunkel.
The Wilson team had a clean sweep of all firsts: first in the horse race on Friday (they had to play two extra holes against Tyler & Tori Windsor), first in the tournament and low score (60) on Sunday. The Wilson father daughter team, started their final round one behind another father daughter team, Paul & Haley Gunkel, who had scored a 60, and were tied with two other teams at 61 but soon took the lead and never looked back. This is a nice end of the year for Kelsi who has been the #1 player in the Elk City High School team and and who after graduating this year, will soon be attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
The Tumbleweed Couples is a very popular event in Western Oklahoma and attended by couples from as far south as Dallas area, and as far north and Kansas; as far west as Amarillo and as far east as Arkansas, and many have been coming for over 15 years. As it is common, flights are determined after the first day's scores, but in a unique Elk City way: the number of teams in each flight is determined in advance so as to avoid any controversies as to why a flight was broken at a particular score. Unique as well, is the way in which the "bump" rule is determined and used. In Elk City, the "bump" number is drawn by a player, in front of all participants, after all scores have been posted. The target score with which a team will remain in the flight is calculated by adding the first day leader's score in the flight plus that score minus the "bump number" (if the flight's leader is at 65 and the "bump number is a 4", the leader can add a 61 to their score for a target score of 126 and not get bumped, and any team lower that 126 is bumped to the next best flight). This year though, for the first time in the last four years, NO ONE GOT BUMPED!
The results of the other flights were as follow:
