This was yet, while not the fastest, the smoothest Oil & Gas Tournament I have been part of. Part of of the slower times was the fact that Saturday, players were not allowed to drive on the fairways as usual due to the rain on Thursday and Friday.
It rained so much that we had several calls to the pro-shop asking if we were still going to have the tournament. As well, Debbie Smoot (and perhaps even the Chamber of Commerce) received many calls as well, as this tournament's pairings, scoring and rules are well handled by a separate committee of golfers who work on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, of which Debbie Smoot is the chairwoman. This was the 46th Oil & Gas Tournament, and, not only the smoothest since 2011, but also the most appreciated by participants and committee since Elk City has felt the bite of the lower oil prices when company after company has left town or have laid off so many workers.
Anyway, the field was full with 72 teams (288 golfers), and the 7:00 a.m. shotgun start on Friday went as scheduled, while the 1:00 p.m. shotgun start went out a little later due to the slower pace n a wet golf course. And on Saturday, when players were allowed on the fairways, the pace increased and all went just as smooth as it could be. One thing I would like to say is that, given the wet conditions of the fairways, that the golfers did not do any significant damage anywhere -I didn't see any on Sunday nor was it reported to me of any damage- that is not normal wear and tear. THANK YOU!
Traditionally, the 72 teams are divided into four flights (A,B,C & D) after the scores of the first day; then, after all scores are turned in on Saturday's second and final round, there is a "bump" rule in effect (guys, quit asking me or Debbie what the "bump" is going to be, you know we cannot tell you, even if we knew, LOL!!). To my knowledge, no one was "bumped" this year, and the results are as follow:
A:
110 - Sooner Energy (*)
110 - Anadarko Dozer
112 - O'Hara Insurance
B:
117 - Party of Fore
118 - True Tubing Solutions
119 - Hutchinson Oil (*)
119 - Jet Specialty
C:
125 - Premier Dental
126 - Fiber Crafteers (*)
126 - Woodies' Rowdies (*)
126 - First National Bank
D:
132 - Moran Equipment
133 - J&J Sales
134 - Western Sizzlin (*)
134 - Gibson Energy
There were no Hole in Ones and to our knowledge, there was only one "hole out" from over 50 yards away, and that belonged to "once a year" player (playing for Dodson Construction) Mike Uhruh.
Closest to the Hole winners:
AM: Jack Coody PM: Kelly Smith
Long Drive Winners:
AM: Luke Lewallen PM: Joby Gray
(*) Won scorecard playoff
