There is always a crowd for each of these that will make a tournament or a Sunday game a success. In this case, we had 74 people in 37 teams, playing a tough format: 6 holes low ball, six holes scramble and six holes alternate shots.
Every tournament has a little story, and this was not void of one. Here is a short story made long (sorry!). In this case, the story involves me, because I ended up being one of the players, trying to fill in big, big, shoes, as Sean Cowan could not play with mom Ann to defend the win that they had last year (they won by 5 shots!). If you know Ann, she wanted to "defend" her win of last year and be in the field, but she could not get any of her sons, or a good "A" player, so, she settled for yours truly!
Again, if you know Ann (and if know anything about my game), I had some really heavy pressure on my shoulders to the point I tried three (yes, 3!) different sets of irons in the three days preceding the tournament because I didn't want to be "dead weight"! As if I could buy a game uh?
Anyway, we managed to play into a bogey-less round that ended up not counting because we broke the rules by inadvertently using one more "mulligan" than allocated! Later, when Ann was recalling our round to someone as I was ready to post scores, she realized our mistake and before I posted our score, she said, without sugar coating it, "you need to disqualify us, we used one too many mulligans" which indeed had. So much for my heavy practice!
The real story though, even if shorter, was that the "heavy-hitters" (on paper), were all outplayed by Tom Gilliland and "former" heavy hitter Tyler Windsor, a team that was in no one's radar. Then, to top it off for the family (Tom is Tyler's uncle), Tori, Tyler's wife, also won her flight with family friend Larry Johnson!. Not bad for a fun Monday!
