The October 5 date had been planned for a long time, so when the week started with a forecast of bad weather, many of the regular Tuesday night scramble golfers stayed away... to their regret! (at least one member who is a regular on Tuesday nights when he is in town, openly admitted that he regretted not having been there because of the weather forecast).
The weather was cool in the morning, but by the time the tournament started at noon, all you needed was a light jacket and golf balls in your bag. The sun had come up, the temperature had risen to the mid 70's and the wind was down to a nice breeze. Perfect for golf and for sharing time with friends.

Because the tournament was played in foursomes instead of the typical "eightsomes", players finished early and we had plenty of daylight to conduct the additional activities of "Drive, Chip & Putt".
We started with the putting, then the chipping and ended with the long drive contest. It is like a crescendo, it goes from barely exciting, to lots of fun, to really exciting. I've never seen so many adult people on a putting green at our course at the same time, and then, of course, the holes cut on the putting clock are anything but on a flat spot. Golfers not only compete for the small prizes, but have side games to add to the interest of all.
By the time golfers eat and start the pitching contest (about 30-40 yards from the hole) to the 18th green from an area close to the east deck that overlooks the course, they get surprised by how difficult that pitch shot really is: downhill, from a slight downhill lie, to one of the toughest greens on the course to hold the ball, and then adding the fact that the green was hard and slick.... 70% of the balls that landed on the green, ended up at least 25 yards down the hill!
The side contests ended up with a long driving contest, from the back of the 18th green, towards #13 green. The distance to the center of this green is 331 yards. There are another 42 yards on that line to the water hazard on #15. This year, to increase participation, we added some "enticing" rules... and it worked pretty good: 1) any ball more than 15 yards off the center line, was deducted the additional yardage off (example: if a ball was 27 yards off the center line, you deducted 12 yards from the drive's original distance) 2) Every golfer added one yard to their drive for each year of age (if you are 30, you added 30 yards; if you are 76, you add 76 yards); this rule #2 was actually well received by everyone, even the younger players, and in the end, it proved to be a pretty fair rule that gave most everyone a chance.
