MEMBER-GUEST

The 2014 Member-Guest (with some member-member teams) tournament hosted 47 teams which were later divided into four flights.

The tournament in itself is a party which starts on Friday afternoon with a "horse race", which this year, hosted 10 teams playing alternate shots. The winning team was former member Alfred "Thumper" Gaylean who partnered with Dustin Gunkel. In second place were Paul Gunkel and Jeff Donaghey and in third place were

On Saturday, as prognosticated in all weather forecasts that we saw, the wind blew steadily from 30-35 m.p.h. with gusts of up to 60 m.p.h.!! Pretty brutal for golf, nevertheless, the scores were pretty good for teams of two players and the teams had a lot of fun.

The pairings showed to have five to six pretty strong teams on paper, and to no one's surprise three out of those, came in the first three places, what was sort of a surprise for some, is that within those three, perhaps the weakest on paper was the winner. I say "perhaps" the weakest because one its players, Craig Martin at 60, is at least two decades older than any of the players on the other two teams, however, "Digger", as his friends call him, is no strange to good golf as he holds the course record for the layout before teeing areas were added in the late 90's and early 2000's with a score of 59.

Digger and partner Brett Britain came prepared for a good match, and finished 2,3 on 17 and 18 to post a 60 and win by a single stroke over "Thumper"-Dustin Gunkel and Aaron Kauk-Bret Matlock. In 4th, with a 65 were two teams, Ronnie Smith-Russ Smith and Jordan Williamson-Joel Paden, the Smith's won the card playoff.

In each of the other 3 flights, a playoff was necessary to determine the winner.

In the "B" flight, Dr. Craig Phelps & partner Chris Stark (67) defeated the teams of Greg Dodson-Shawn Tennery and Adam Lewellen-RyanOmen. In fourth, with a 68 were 4 teams: Keith Hulen-Josh Howard, Jack Coody-Rick McNeal, Tyler Windsor-Larry Johnson, Trey Campbell-Matt Cook and Rusty Wilson-Gary Wilson, with the Wilson's winning the scorecard playoff on #1.

In the "C" Flight, Juan Lopez & Zack Lindsey (70) defeated Ricky Nagle-Warren Mayfield (70) in a sudden death playoff which started on hole #10. In 3rd, with a 71 were Bob Griffith-Bob Miller, Jeff Rule-Brian Fox, Ricky Marr-Wes Marshall and David Poole-Justin-Twiman; after a scorecard playoff, Griffith and Miller won 3rd and Rule-Fox won 4th.

In the "D" Flight, Mike Clinton-Brett Davis won the sudden death playoff against Jim Dearin-Bobby Glasgow and Allen Robinson-Larry Hudgens. In 4th, with a 74 were Kim Jordan-Rick Martin, who defeated Jeff Smoot-Gary Jennings and  Eddie Davis-Danny Teel in a scorecard playoff.

Closest to the hole winners were: Thumper Gaylean, Craig Martin, Terry Stone, Jerry Sizemore and Larry Johnson.

The tournament was followed by a dinner and a dance, where Dancing With The Stars Elk City Style featured Joe Wynn dancing with 90 year old Edwina Lucero doing a pretty good "Quick Step"...

See you next year!
