Elections:
The Elk City Golf & Country Club has nine members in the Board of Directors which include the president. To keep continuity in issues, every year, three members are elected to a three year term after which Board members elect a president for a one year term.
The three Board members whose term expired yesterday were Rusty Wilson, Jeff Rule and Brad Gilbert. Jeff Rule, who served six years, opted out. Rusty Wilson and Brad Gilbert put their name in the hat again for another three year term. They were both re-elected to the Board along with new Board member Paul Gunkel.
Rusty Wilson was re-elected president, Brad Gilbert vice-president and Ann Cowan continued as secretary and events director.
The president went over last year's meeting reading the minutes and then made a short presentation, followed by a presentation by Ed Hughes and then one by myself. For all details, contact Myra Baker or a Board member, but here is a summary.
Ed Hughes went over the changes on the course set-up, improvements and changes in maintenance procedures, including the "Dry-Ject" procedure now used on the greens during aerification and top-dressing, a procedure that allows the greens to heal faster than when taking cores off the ground. We used it last year for the first time and you could play on the greens without any noticeable bumps after a day or two.
I went over the golf revenue, number of rounds and golf activities. Members can obtain financial details, which are privy to members only, by contacting Myra Baker or Rusty Wilson, as these will not be published here. However, we can say that number of rounds were down by 6% overall, still higher than every year, but 2013, and our golf activities did not lack.
Here is the part of my report which can be published here:
- The outfit who used to lease us golf carts during the season notified us that starting this year, they will only do tournaments and that we should seek a direct contract with a manufacturer, which we did, and we leased 15 brand new fuel-injected carts. We previously owned 7 carts, two of which went to maintenance, so we will have a fleet of twenty year round. Cart fee, which was the lowest in the state of Oklahoma and on the low end compared everywhere, went up to just below average ($25 per 18 holes round).
- Our junior camp hosted 52 kids (and we will keep it at that number). My assistants last year were Tim DeWitt (who as a teacher knows really well how to "handle" kids, LOL), his son Conner, Ann Cowan and Colin Dyson. For the second year in a row, Bart & Shannon Barnett hosted a junior tournament in which they fed all, donated prizes and gave a gift to all participants. We also hosted an "opening" junior tournament. Our junior program is going well and should be a source of good players for future high school teams.
- We had the same number of tournaments as the previous year, minus one, the Boy Scouts did not come back. We hosted the fourth GPN Bank Bedlam which hosted 144 players (now limited to that number) and the third and most likely last Loves-Linn Children's Hospitals Miracle Network Benefit Scramble. The reason being is that Linn was sold and the two principals organizing the event with us were transferred, one to Oklahoma City and one to Texas, 6-7 hours away.
- Our Club Championship -YOUR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP- continues to grow. As it grows, we will add more flights: last year we had five men's flights including the Championship Flight, three senior flights (all men seniors play in any of the other men's flights) and two women's flights. Our division champions were: Joby Gray (Club Champion), Craig Martin (Senior Champion) and Ann Cowan (Women's Champion).
- We announced that three kids and an as many adults did very well in representing Elk City and keeping Elk City in the news: Logan Gore became the first local junior to win the Junior Oklahoma Match Play Championship along with several other accomplishments, Tres Hill (11) and Ryder Cowan (9) won all but two of the events they entered and both won their age division in the State Tournament. Ann Cowan was in the news as she was inducted in her hometown high school's athletic hall of fame (Danbury, CT), Rusty and Kelsi Wilson were the first father-daughter team in 20 years to win the Tumbleweed Couples (the other father daughter team who won the Tumbleweed was Steve & Carrie Chambers, and we also announced our (pleasant) surprise to have had Cory Smith compete in his first individual tournament since 2011, which he won (the 2014 Elk City Shootout - new name for the "4th of July Weekend" tournament in order not to confuse with the Firecracker Open which is played in July 4th).
- In the "to the member information" area, this blog has had 77,000 hits up to date, and our Facebook page has had over 30,000 hits and our audience is growing, and we informed those that will not get into any other "social media".
- In closing last night, I also informed those present that Jeff Rule, the outgoing board member and whom I will always thank for his input, was the one person who suggested we design a website -in addition to the blog- which is the reason we do have a website (http://elkcitygolf.com), and also he was the one who came out with the idea to have a Sunday game, thus. the Sunday Shuffle was born.
- Last night, I forgot to mention those present that GPN Bank (Mark Russell-Tony Mikles), CUDD (David Dominiak-Mark Spitz), GAS (Williamson Family) and Doug Gray Auto (Doug & Roberta Gray) helped us with the re-doing of the range area, which will be improved this year as well. I would like to thank these businesses and people here. I also forgot to mention that the Elk City News has been more than helpful to further the golf news around our town and their readers.
- In closing this morning, I want to thank all members for their continuous support and input, and for their relationship with the club. Our work for you (Ramona and I) is a position at the pleasure of the Board of Directors and we pledge to continue doing our best to serve you in every possible way. A special thanks to Myra Baker and Ed Hughes, both of whom work hard to give the necessary services to our membership and both of whom give great cooperation to the pro-shop and overall cause.
